And when you assume the posture of prayer, remember that it’s not all asking. If you have anything against someone, forgive—only then will your heavenly Father be inclined to also wipe your slate clean of sins. (Mark 11:25 The Message)
I felt a roadblock in my communication with the Lord. I prayed about it, but I didn’t find inner peace or direction. My tattered red flags whipped in my emotional wind. I asked, When did this feeling of isolation begin?
A conversation I had with my husband, Dan, the previous day started it. A difference of opinion grew into a major disagreement as we bantered over an important decision. My chest tightened and my head pounded as I tried to reconcile our differences.
A familiar scripture came to mind: “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you” (Eph. 4:31–32 NLT).
Am I still angry? I remembered the harsh words we exchanged. Am I refusing to forgive, Lord?
I knew the next thing I needed to communicate to Dan was an apology. It took time to work through all my emotional baggage. But forgiveness and peace soon returned to our home again.
