A few months ago, I found myself avoiding working on posts for my blog site. Why? Because my website wasn’t “good enough.”
Is it perfect now? No.
Why did I choose to write blog posts again? Good question. I’m glad you asked.
As I examined the blogs of other writers, who are known to be “successful” authors, I noted that some were not particularly outstanding. A few came close, but I could always find weaknesses. A broken weblink. A misplaced comma. None seemed to have developed a “perfect” website.
I did find a several writers who were earning money (it seems) trying to teach others how to make their website better. I understand why.
While examining other areas in my life that weren’t perfect, I didn’t need to look beyond the mirror. Wrinkles, gray hair, and tight-fitting clothes illustrated my own issues.
Then, I spoke to my soul again. Look, Karen. You’ve got grown kids and grandkids. Do you really expect to still look like you’re 30? Besides would you really want to be 30 again?
No way! I don’t want to go back there—too many hard times on the roads I traveled. Every wrinkle and gray hair reminds me of a powerful life lesson I embraced on the road to my sixties.
So, what does the Bible say about perfection?
When a rich young man asked Jesus what he needed to do to be perfect, so he could earn eternal life, Jesus replied, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me” (Matt. 19:21 ESV).
When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. (Matt. 19:22 ESV)
What about you? Are you willing to do what it takes to be “perfect”? For that young man, it would have cost him all of his possessions to follow Christ. Sadly, he wasn’t willing to let go of those things.
Maybe you’re not rich. And you’re not concerned about living a perfect life or even following Christ. But do you struggle with your inability to be perfect in some area of your life? Or did you decided to let go of the dream of perfection long ago?
Maybe you don’t have a problem writing blog posts. Perhaps you’ve given up on your health. Or on a relationship. Or on a dream. Or on faith, like the young man in the story in Matthew.
What can we learn from the Bible about perfection?
I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back. (Phil 3:12-14 The Message)
In what area of your life do you struggle with perfection?
Beautiful words to live by!!!
Great to hear from you, Kenett! Thanks so much for the comment!
